Very nice Interview with Chuck from 1991
R.I.P. Chuck - you will never be forgotten

The family of late DEATH/CONTROL DENIED mastermind Chuck Schuldiner is moving ahead with plans to complete and eventually release the long-awaited second CONTROL DENIED album.

Chuck — who passed away in December 2001 after a battle with pontine glioma, a rare type of brain tumor — began work on the CD, tentatively titled "When Machine And Man Collide", but never managed to finish the effort before his health quickly deteriorated in the months leading up to his tragic death. The remaining members of the group — bassist Steve DiGiorgio, vocalist Tim Aymar, guitarist Shannon Hamm, and drummer Richard Christy — subsequently announced their desire to complete the album and release it in Chuck's memory, but legal hassles between Schuldiner's family and Hammerheart Records (to whom Chuck was signed at the time of his death) put the entire project on hold. (Karmageddon Media — formerly Hammerheart Records — has since issued various incomplete demo recordings as two separate low-quality albums, "Zero Tolerance" and "Zero Tolerance II".)

Chuck's mother, Jane Schuldiner, previously stated about the unfinished recordings: "[Chuck's] last masterpiece deserves more than to be released as unfinished bits of rehearsal room recordings on CD, or to be grabbed for free on the Internet. It deserves to be finished by the rest of the band and to be released on a full-length album, titled: 'When Machine And Man Collide'."

In a new posting on Chuck's official web site, Empty Words, Aymar had the following to say regarding the forthcoming CONTROL DENIED album:

"Those who know Chuck's music from DEATH and CONTROL DENIED have faithfully and patiently awaited the announcement of the completion of Chuck's dying wish, which is to get the final CONTROL DENIED record out to you , and along with my other bandmates, I am extremely happy to be here to fulfill the promise I made a decade ago.

"When I first talked to Chuck about auditioning for a new band he was working on, an extension of his former band DEATH which he called CONTROL DENIED. We first talked over the telephone, and he was not at all like what I had expected him to be. My bandmate, co-writer and dear friend Jimmy Dofka from PSYCHO SCREAM had turned me on to DEATH a few months before, and the picture I had in my mind of Chuck, judging only by how precise and beautifully violent that music is, was of a brutal tyrant. I mean, after all, just listen to Gene Hoglan's drumming and the command of Chuck's blood-soaked screaming, and you'll know what I mean.

"Well, I was delightfully wrong. The voice on the phone was just a guy like me, an easy-going, slow-talking hippie with a burning passion for metal. We both understood the seriousness of the business at hand, but neither of made it seem anything but exciting and fun, and that was awesome. That's just what professionals do. We talked about our tastes in music and inspirations and our idols.

"We were definitely on the same page. He said he wanted me to audition because from what he'd heard already from PSYCHO SCREAM, my voice had all the qualities he had been looking for since he began his journey into metal. There's a bit of everyone we both liked in there, a bit of Dio, Halford, Tyler, Gillan, Bonnet, all the best screamers in the biz. With that in mind, we set a date and I flew down to meet him and do the audition. I thought maybe there was a chance he was blowing a bit of smoke up my ass, because that's just what some people do. But no, as it turns out, he was one of the few people in this biz that didn't.

"I arrived at Orlando international [airport] and just grabbed my stuff at the luggage return, when Chuck, Scott, Chris and Shannon came running and screaming through the hallway like pack of wild dogs yelling, 'Tim Scream, Tim Scream,' my new nickname which later, at the house I found inscribed on a half gallon bottle of Jim Beam. They mugged me of my luggage, lifted me up and threw me in the air like a rag doll.

"I knew this was gonna be a hell of a week already.

"Surprisingly, we jumped into the car and they had the PSYCHO SCREAM tape in the player, and they were singing along like they'd known it forever. We got to the house and there it was... the ominous bottle with the letters J and B scratched out and the rest of the letters Sharpied in to spell out Tim Scream.

"We got to work right away...on the booze, and then we listened to a bunch of stuff from Chuck's vinyl collection.

"Once we got rolling in the studio, the work went smooth as buttermilk. We knocked out three songs in two-and-a-half days rather than the five we expected, so Chuck mixed down the tunes and when he was finished he called me into the kitchen. He poured us each a shot of Tim Scream, handed me one and said, 'We're all very happy about this, and if you want the job, I won't even call Halford back.'

"I could not believe what I had just heard. He not only wanted a voice like one of my all time greatest idols, he had planned on auditioning him after me. But that's how he said it. That's just what bosses do.

"The police showed up at our first practice as a band. Chuck was polite, but firm in his conviction when he said, 'You might think you know who you came here to hassle, but you don't know I'm probably the only person on this street whose house is paid for and my taxes are paid as well, I've been all over the world with my band and that's how I bought this place and not how these people who called you tell their children who say shit to my nephew at school and send him home crying. I just paid like 10 grand to soundproof my home so these people would not hear us, and now you're telling me it's too loud? What is the law? I'll abide [by] it.' He wanted to know because that's just what good neighbors do.

"So, at the end of the week it was time to say goodbye and I waited for the call from Chuck to find out the progress on his soliciting the demos. I waited, and worked my engineering job at Soundscape, and my management job at a home-improvement company sales office. Several family members had passed away, including my mom, and I was laid off from work, and Chuck did find a record deal with Nuclear Blast America, but it was for DEATH. I wasn't sure why he didn't contact me, but finally I got an email from Liz at Nuclear Blast and she told me Chuck lost my number and needed to talk with me about CONTROL DENIED. Then a friend brought over a copy of [DEATH's] 'The Sound Of Perseverance' and showed me the liner notes. Chuck had written to me through the liner notes that he lost my number. This is immortalized. Then when I went to pick up the phone to call him, it rang, I answered and it was him. It wasn't the first time it happened; it happened before and several times after this. It happens with other friends, too. That's just what spiritual connections do.

"I met up with the whole DEATH lineup when they finally hit Pittsburgh, and hung out with them for the rest of the night. This was my first time meeting Richard Christy, our drummer. Chris had already decided to move on, and that was OK, because we all knew how much he loved CONTROL DENIED, but he just couldn't hang around waiting and he joined up with another project. Richard I had already heard with his previous band BURNING INSIDE, because they are on the same compilation CD as PSYCHO SCREAM, so technically we were already on the same record together, although in separate bands.

"Well, Richard and I couldn't have hit it off any better. We're both practical jokers. Richard devised a plan to mess with the tour manager. He took a candy circus peanut, stuffed it into the neck of a Heineken bottle and popped the lid back on, and handed it to me. He said, put this in the cooler and when I tell you, grab it and give it to this guy. So the tour manager jumps on the bus and says, 'Somebody get me a beer,' and I handed him the Heiney. He popped off the top and tried to take a swig. Upon further inspection, he noticed something odd and that was my cue. 'Oh my god, there's a fucking mouse in it. Holy shit, it's a fucking mouse.' He just about vomited when we let him in on the joke. I showed them down the street to the 'O' to get some greasy-but-good-greasy pizza and we joked and talked some more and later, Richard said to me, 'You got a lot of balls fucking with the tour manager the first time we've met.' I waited for the punch line... 'So you're gonna fit right in with this bunch.' Yep, I already knew it.

"So I went back home again, and a month or so later , I packed my bags for Orlando. This time, it was to demo some new tunes since a few of the ones on the CONTROL DENIED tapes had been 'DEATH-ized' and recorded on 'The Sound Of Perseverance'. We demoed and wrote and re-demoed and re-wrote and we rehearsed with the band and.. barbequed. AAAAAAh yeah, carnivores, all of us. We love carnage, and Chuck was our master chef.

"Being a former chef by trade, I was impressed. He loved coffee and bagels too, so it became our morning ritual. Gourmet coffee, bagels and cream cheese, Jerry Springer and Southern rock. To get fired up before we hit the studio, we had our breakfast watching Jerry Springer to laugh at the stupidity, and we ordered up MOLLY HATCHET from the local radio station. When HATCHET came on, we'd crank it up and sing along at the top of our lungs like complete idiots. It was such a blast, so... not what you'd expect from such a prominent figure in the music business, yet that's why it all worked. How could anyone in the world have an ego tantrum or a pissing contest after behaving in such a manner? Impossible.

"Wait, I haven't even mentioned catfish sandwiches or Bethanne [Chuck's sister] yet. This story gets better.

"I met Chuck's sister at the country club she worked at. I had mentioned that I loved catfish, so they highly recommended the catfish sandwich. OH MY God! Good catfish, but I mean Bethanne. It took maybe five minutes to realize how awesome a gal she is. Not only is she a sight for sore eyes, she's sharp as a whip, funny as hell, a practical joker as well, and did I mention whip? Later on I saw another side of Bethanne I admire even more. DO NOT TRY TO HURT HER. I swear to that thing people swear to, if you try to hurt Bethanne, we're all gonna step aside and let her loose on you. I mean, I'd rather go toe to toe with Chuck Norris than piss her off. But seriously, when it comes down to it, she's the best sister in the world.

"OK, back to the barbequing.

"So, it was Valentine's Day. Chuck and I are two bachelors spending the day together because we're two weeks into rehearsals and still wrapping up the demos. Chuck bought chickens and steaks and I bought prawns and lobster tails and we're preparing a feast for ourselves and the rest of the cast of carnivores who were en route. Just as they rolled in for dinner and practice, Chuck brought me the phone. 'It's your dad,' he said. I almost swallowed my tongue. 'Huh?' My dad only calls me when bad things happen like when someone dies. 'You have to come home,' my dad said. 'Little Danny died.'

"My youngest brother was Chuck's age; this could NOT be real. The guys heard what just happened and they huddled around me and kept me from falling apart; that's just what brothers do. Chuck yelled, 'What bag do you want to take?' Oh fuck, this IS real. 'Don't worry, Bethanne and mom are gonna book you a flight and I'll get you to the airport right away.' It seemed like maybe three seconds but it must have been an hour or so, that she had the flight booked. That's just what sisters do. Chuck got me to the airport, and explained the story of his brother Frank, and why he named his band DEATH in order to turn such a horrible, negative feeling into something positive. 'Take your time, as long as you need, and when you get back, I want you to put everything you're feeling right now into this record, for yourself, for your brother and for mine, and from now on we have each other, we are brothers in pain, and it's our obligation to the fans to give them what we honestly feel.' I did, because that's just what singers do.

"Midway through recording, Chuck started having a problem with severe headaches and neck pain. Well, he'd been a guitarist for half his life and a headbanger at that, and he'd just come home a month before from a long-ass tour and had been spending more time than I would want to screaming at the record company about how they planned on launching this band. So I recommended he see a chiropractor to adjust his neck and get the blood flowing and that should have taken care of the headaches, too. Well, it would have, if the problem hadn't been a malignant brain-stem tumor that took his life two years later. That's just what cancers do. I know survivors, but I'm sure their survival were inevitable and were not recovery or a cure from any sort of treatment. These are people who had so much money that the doctors tried to kill them slower in order to get all their money, and the 'treatments' weren't strong enough to kill them, so their cancers probably went away on their own. That is also just what cancers do. And don't try to tell me otherwise, because I'm sure you don't know how to fucking cure cancer.

"So here comes the fun part. Before Chuck passed away, shortly after his first surgery he was well enough to write and track his parts, Richard's drums, Shannon's solos and a vocal template for me to go by for each of the songs. He called me shortly after he'd worked on getting the band off of Nuclear Blast because they did not execute several key factors of the contract such as advertising, and small things like FORGETTING TO PUT A FUCKING BARCODE ON THE FIRST 10,000 UNITS??? I've explained all this in great detail time and time again on BLABBERMOUTH.NET, so stop by sometime, search my name or CONTROL DENIED and you'll find plenty from back then. There was a war of words between myself, the new label Hammerheart, who was not financially stable enough to back any promises they had made, and Chuck tried to get that bogus deal settled, and get off that suicide rig, but he died first. leaving his grieving family to contend with the legal battle for nine grueling years. The company was finally forced to admit the deal was fraudulent, but they took the Schuldiners through hell first. That's just what record companies do. A lot of them anyway, but I think we've finally found a home that Chuck would be very proud of at Relapse.

"Enter Eric Greif. He is formerly Chuck's attorney, and considered a brother just like we brothers in the band, and like all brothers sometimes it meant arguments and fighting, and sometimes it meant making up and being best friends again. That's just what brother do, too. Well, Eric has been around the block, so to speak, as far as representing musicians, and he has made great progress on behalf of CONTROL DENIED, DEATH and the Schuldiner legacy. He's now the president of Perseverance Holdings Ltd. and Mutilation Music (BMI) which means basically that he is on board in Chuck's stead, to make sure his intellectual property is managed and his wishes are carried out. He's really kicking some ass since he's come on board. Both DEATH and CONTROL DENIED are now signed with Relapse, one of metal's most respected record companies. There are reissues of several DEATH records and is working to get most of DEATH's records reassigned to Relapse. The CONTROL DENIED CD 'The Fragile Art Of Existence' is re-released as a three- CD set, and a two-CD set, both with loads of special tracks and pictures and notes from the band. It just gets better and better every time I talk with him. That is just what good attorneys do!

"Eric gave me a call yesterday to let me know the time has come. Did you hear that? No, you probably can't believe I just said it. THE TIME HAS COME!!! Our producer, Jim Morris at Morrisound in Tampa, Florida who brought to life notable albums by DEATH, CONTROL DENIED, TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA, SAVATAGE, ICED EARTH, SEVEN MARY THREE, CANNIBAL CORPSE, DEICIDE, MORBID ANGEL, DEMONS AND WIZARDS, END-TIME ILLUSION, and OBITUARY, just to name a fraction of the killer artists on their roster, has contacted Eric Greif, informing the members of CONTROL DENIED that he is ready to begin laying out the planning and scheduling to complete Chuck Schuldiner's legacy, 'When Machine And Man Collide'. You heard it right, and you heard it straight from the horse's (hey, wait a minute) mouth. This record will see the light of day and be in your hands sometime in 2011 and Jim will make certain it's every bit as awesome as Chuck ever wanted and then some!!! That's what the Morrises do."

"Go now and carry this message to the metal masses and keep the metal flowing! That's what metal crusaders do. And we love you for it!!!

Relapse Records is honored to announce a partnership with Perseverance Holdings Ltd. and the Schuldiner family to reissue the legendary catalog of heavy metal luminary Chuck Schuldiner and his bands DEATH, CONTROL DENIED, and MANTAS.

Chuck Schuldiner’s DEATH, one of the most important and influential metal bands of all-time, will see the first official digital releases of it’s legendary albums ‘Scream Bloody Gore’, ‘Leprosy’, ‘Spiritual Healing’, ‘Human’, ‘Individual Thought Patterns’, and ‘The Sound Of Perseverance’ tomorrow, May 11th at this location. These digital releases will come two days before Chuck Schuldiner would have celebrated his 43rd birthday. Schuldiner passed away on December 13, 2001 after fighting a long, recurring battle with brain cancer.

Relapse will also reissue an expanded version of the classic debut album, ‘The Fragile Art Of Existence’, from Schuldiner’s progressive heavy metal band CONTROL DENIED in late 2010 as well as the first-ever collection by his pre-DEATH project MANTAS. The expanded version of “The Fragile Art of Existence” will include bonus tracks, extra band photography, expanded art and packaging and more. Details on both releases are forthcoming.

Long-range plans include the completion and official release of the final CONTROL DENIED album ‘When Man and Machine Collide’. Recorded over 10 years ago at Morrisound Studios with producer Jim Morris, ‘When Man and Machine Collide’ was tracked by Schuldiner but left incomplete upon Chuck’s passing.

A range of officially-licensed DEATH, CONTROL DENIED, and MANTAS merchandise has also been issued here. Many classic album art designs will follow in the coming months, making some highly sought-after designs available officially for the first time in years. Stay tuned to Emptywords.org, the official DEATH / CONTROL DENIED / Chuck Schuldiner website, and Relapse.com for more information.

Guitar World Magazine has released a special DEATH guitar transcription issue, available exclusively at this location. The book contains eight complete guitar and bass tabs for the following DEATH songs; “Pull The Plug”, “Zombie Ritual”, “Together As One”, “Spiritual Healing”, “Flesh and the Power It Holds”, “Crystal Mountain”, “The Philosopher”, and “Scavenger of Human Sorrow”. All songs were transcribed by Guitar World’s ace transcription team and are note-for-note accurate. The book also features the complete life and times of Chuck Schuldiner, including interviews with those who knew him best.

B.C. RICH Pays Tribute To Late DEATH Mastermind CHUCK SCHULDINER

Stephen Jensen of Crystal Lake, Illinois' F3 Studios was asked by B.C. Rich Guitars to help them pay tribute to the legendary Chuck Schuldiner.

Chuck is best known for being the founder, singer, rhythm/lead guitar player and main songwriter of DEATH, which he founded in 1983 and was one of the first bands of the death metal genre. Music biographers have referred to Schuldiner as the father of death metal. Chuck passed away on December 13, 2001 at age 34 after a a battle with pontine glioma, a rare type of brain tumor.

Chuck was well known for playing the custom made B.C. Rich Stealth and is single-handedly credited with making the guitar famous. In 2008, B.C. Rich decided to pay tribute to Chuck with a reissue of his famous Stealth with a portion of proceeds going directly to the family of Chuck Schuldiner. Check out the guitar here. http://www.bcrich.com/stealth.html

To help pay tribute to Chuck Schuldiner, B.C. Rich asked Stephen Jensen to create a tribute crest design to promote the tribute guitar. Stephen is honored to have been asked to create this logo design and help salute another great guitar hero who left his mark on music history.

Hallo Humandeath Fans

Bye Jochen S.O.D (The Webmaster)

Hello Humandeath Fans

Maybe you recognized that I haven’t made some updates the last few Weeks. This has a special reason. It’s not a bad reason - humandeath is still existing. No Panic ;)

But at the moment I build a home (domicile) together with my girlfriend. And this work needs my complete free time. For the next half year I can’t make big updates at the page. But we look forward to see a End of this work. And if we are done with our work, and live in our new home, I have again more time for the Page and Humandeath will still go on as the biggest DEATH Tribute Page in the World Wilde Web.

Thanx for your understanding

Bye Jochen S.O.D (The Webmaster)

Guitarist JAMES MURPHY Checks In With Update On DEATH Tribute Album

Guitarist James Murphy (ex-DEATH, OBITUARY, TESTAMENT) has issued the following update regarding the status of the upcoming tribute CD, "Within The Mind - In Homage To The Musical Legacy Of Chuck Schuldiner":

"I've just returned home to Florida from a six-week stay in Los Angeles where I got tons of work done for the DEATH tribute CD, 'Within The Mind', which I have been working on together with Deron Miller of CKY for a while now.

"My first week was at Deron's home where he recorded rhythm guitars for several of the album's tracks. I was expecting that he would do well but he blew my expectations out the door... he played the songs amazingly and knew them right off the top of his head.. and very few punches were necessary (a rare feat, trust me)... he knew the songs THAT well!

"In week two I stayed at the home of one-time DEATH guitarist Albert Gonzales. Albert, as those who know their DEATH history very well will remember, was the guitarist who took my place for the second U.S. tour in support of 'Spiritual Healing'. I had met Albert while I was still in DEATH when we played a festival that his then band, EVIL DEAD, also played. Albert is a killer jazz-influenced player whose solo style obviously impressed Chuck quite a bit back in 1990 and which is even more developed now and his contribution to the 'Within The Mind' tribute is VERY cool and brings his part in the legacy of DEATH to full circle.

"During week three I made a quick trip up to Seattle where I recorded NEVERMORE guitarist Jeff Loomis (photo, with James), HIMSA guitarist Matt Wicklund, and ex-FORBIDDEN, ex-NEVERMORE guitarist Tim Calvert. Jeff laid down two incredible solos, but that will be no surprise to those who have heard him and followed his career in NEVERMORE. Matt and Tim recorded a great solo each. It was cool to see from Matt's contribution yet another example that tasteful playing is alive and well in newer metal bands and it was an equally great pleasure to see Tim step back in from musical retirement (he has a successful aviation career) and show that he still has it.

"For week four I was back at Albert Gonzales' home where RISE vocalist/guitarist Istvan Lendvay also resides. Those unfamiliar with RISE may know Istvan from his touring stints as fill-in guitarist and bassist, respectively, for BEHEMOTH and VITAL REMAINS. Istvan lent his vocals to one track with great results. I also spent a few days resting and recuperating from the heavy schedule during this week.

"Week 5 brought me to the home of BRUJERIA, ASESINO, ex-FEAR FACTORY guitarist Dino Cazares where drummer Nicholas Barker (BRUJERIA, OLD MAN'S CHILD, LOCK-UP, ex-DIMMU BORGIR, ex-CRADLE OF FILTH) was also staying during a trip to the U.S. to rehearse with Dino for some BRUJERIA shows and to write some material for their as yet unnamed new project. Nick (photo, with Dino, Deron Miller and James) laid down the foundation for two more songs for the tribute and Dino contributed his signature rhythm guitars to one of those. Once again, I am very happy and I can't wait for everyone to hear them on the CD. Off the subject of the DEATH tribute for a moment.....during this week Dino and Nick asked me to record and mix two of their new songs for their new band.. I did and I can tell you that it's awesome material and these two guys will be roaring back very soon with a full CD of new material with their new band and it's awesome, brutal, fast, technical, VERY heavy and catchy.

"Week 6: Amidst preparations to fly home and wrapping up the recordings with Dino and Nick I also managed in the final week to meet back up with Deron Miller who laid down an excellent vocal track and I also brought another bassist on board who happens to be an old friend of mine and a longtime DEATH and death metal fan — Tony Campos of STATIC-X. I've known Tony since about 1996 and, despite that his primary band is not known for playing death metal, his sincerity as fan of Chuck's music and death metal in general is the same now as it was when I first met him some 8 years or so ago.

"I'm back in Florida now and planning the next trip out.. this time the east and northeast U.S. and a short trip into Canada... time to buy new thermals! As always I welcome your comments.... just don't bother attacking the credibility or musicianship of any of the guests. Each were held to high standards and 2 major criteria... #1: Each must have been a fan of DEATH and Chuck for years #2: Musicianship, musicianship, musicianship — each guest must be able to play Chuck's music... and well.

"Thanks for following the progress and for your patience... it's going to be worth the wait!"

CHUCK SCHULDINER: 'Zero Tolerance II' To Include Early Demo Material, Live Recording - Aug. 9, 2004

Holland's Karmageddon Media (formerly Hammerheart Records) has announced plans to issue another collection of early demo recordings by late DEATH/CONTROL DENIED mastermind Chuck Schuldiner. Entitled "Zero Tolerance II", the CD will reported contain DEATH's first demo, "Death by Metal" (recorded in 1984 under the group's original name, MANTAS) and the follow-up recording, "Reign of Terror", also recorded in 1984. As a bonus, the collection will feature a DEATH live show recorded at the After Dark club in Texas during the "Spiritual Healing" tour in 1990, "with a lot of real and cool things happening during the show," according to a statement from Karmageddon. "And so far there is no cool live recording available from those early days…"

With regards to the status of the incomplete sophomore CD from CONTROL DENIED, Karmageddon said, "Maybe ask the Schuldiner family about that, we simply do not know and they still refuse to tell us, sad enough."

"Zero Tolerance", issued earlier this year through Karmageddon Media, featured DEATH's "Infernal Death" (1985) and "Mutilation" (1986) demos alongside previously unreleased demo recordings from CONTROL DENIED.

Guitarist James Murphy (ex-DEATH, OBITUARY, TESTAMENT) has issued the following update regarding the status of the upcoming tribute CD, "Within The Mind - In Homage To The Musical Legacy Of Chuck Schuldiner":

"Hi everyone,

"It's been a good while since my last update and I apologize... Been quite busy with the 'Within The Mind' project, which for those who don't already know is the star-studded tribute to Chuck Schuldiner and DEATH that I have been working on, as well as a few guest appearances which you will be able to read about on my personal site.

"Here's a list of everyone who has recorded so far...this includes all the way to back to the start of the project and brings us right up to date as of last week:

Richard Christy (drummer from DEATH, CONTROL DENIED, and ICED EARTH)
Mark Hunter (vocalist from CHIMAIRA)
Matt Thompson (drummer from KING DIAMOND)
Matt Difabio (vocalist/guitarist from SINGLE BULLET THEORY and PISSING RAZORS)
Bill Mezic (bassist from SINGLE BULLET THEORY and SEVEN WITCHES)

and most recently....

Jason Bittner (drummer from SHADOWS FALL)
and
Matt Bachand (guitarist from SHADOWS FALL)

"Yes!! a couple weeks ago I traveled to Albany, NY where I was picked up at the airport by Jason Bittner and we headed directly over to Hydrostatic Recording Studios to begin setting up the drums and getting tones for the session.

"We started recording the drum tracks and rough guitar tracks for 3 DEATH songs (not telling yet!) the following day and SHADOWS FALL guitarist Matt Bachand showed up a little later that morning to be on hand to record guitar parts for one of the songs.

"The session went very smoothly and it was easy to tell that Jason had been playing the songs for quite a while and when you finally hear his performance on the CD there will no doubt as to why Modern Drummer magazine recently awarded him the #1 Up And Coming Drummer Award. Matt and Jason both kicked ass on the tracks and once again the high standard set by Richard Christy at the beginning of the project was maintained!

"Next up I'll be heading to the NY area again to record for the project with Dave Culross, Brett Hofmann, Ross Dolan, and others."

Here are some new Infos about the Karmageddon Media Release
CHUCK SCHULDINER «Zero Tolerance» Compilation

Cover:

Traklist:
01 Track 1 – Control Denied
02 Track 2 – Control Denied
03 Track 3 – Control Denied
04 Track 4 – Control Denied
05 Infernal Death
06 Baptized in Blood
07 Archange
08 Land of No Return
09 Zombie Ritual
10 Mutilation

Infos:
No, this is not the new Control Denied-album, no this is not a new Death-recording. These recordings are a very cool Control Denied-rehearsal. Nearly 30 minutes new and rough Control Denied-material, recorded on 16 tracks with Chuck on guitar (and an overdub on a second guitar, plus solo-guitar) and Richard Christy (these days member of Iced Earth) on drums. We think the recordings sound great and we did our ultimate best in mastering them. Track 5, 6 and 7 are the “Infernal Death” demo from 1985 and track 8, 9 and 10 are the “Mutilation” demo from 1986. So all in all an hour of Chuck Schuldiner at the sad end of his great career and in the very early years when everybody could already hear something very special was coming. What will happen with the “real” Control Denied album? Maybe ask the Schuldiner-family about that, we simply do not know and they refuse to tell us sad enough. Anyway, enjoy, if you are a Chuck Schuldiner, Death or Control Denied-fan you will like this…

CHUCK SCHULDINER's 'Zero Tolerance' Due At The End Of The Month

Holland's Karmageddon Media (formerly Hammerheart Records) has set "Zero Tolerance" (view cover here) as the title of the upcoming collection of unfinished recordings made by late DEATH/CONTROL DENIED frontman Chuck Schuldiner, due in Europe on March 22.

As previously reported, Chuck, who passed away in December 2001 after a battle with pontine glioma, a rare type of brain tumor, began work on the sophomore CONTROL DENIED album (under the working title "When Machine and Man Collide") but never managed to complete the effort before his health quickly deteriorated in the months leading up to his tragic death. The remaining members of the group — bassist Steve DiGiorgio, vocalist Tim Aymar, guitarist Shannon Hamm, and drummer Richard Christy — subsequently announced their desire to complete the CD and release it in Chuck's memory, but legal hassles between Schuldiner's family and Hammerheart Records (to whom Chuck was signed at the time of his death) put the entire project on hold. Schuldiner's mother Jane has issued several statements over the course of the last few months denouncing the label's plans to release the incomplete recordings without the family's consent, going so far as to threaten to make any recordings released by Karmageddon available as a free download on Chuck's official web site, EmptyWords.org.

CHUCK SCHULDINER's Mother: CONTROL DENIED Album To Made Available For Free Download

Jane Schuldiner, mother of late DEATH/CONTROL DENIED frontman Chuck Schuldiner, has issued another statement in response to continuing reports that the now-defunct Hammerheart Records (currently operating under the name Karmageddon Media) will be releasing the unfinished sophomore album from CONTROL DENIED this spring.

As previously reported, Chuck, who passed away in December 2001 after a battle with pontine glioma, a rare type of brain tumor, began work on the album (tentatively titled "When Machine and Man Collide") in 2001 but never managed to complete the effort before his health quickly deteriorated in the months leading up to his tragic death.

The following is Jane Schuldiner's statement regarding Hammerheart Records' plans to release the incomplete recordings without the family's consent:

"Hello fans/friends, I have read of plans to release, unauthorized, Chuck's raw music on CD. In response to that news let me say that any demo of Chuck's released by Karmageddon will be put on EmptyWords (www.emptywords.org) by the Schuldiner family to download for free."

DEATH Tribute Album Update: CHIMAIRA Added, Web Site Launched

Former TESTAMENT/DEATH guitarist James Murphy has issued the following update regarding his upcoming DEATH tribute project, "Within The Mind - In Homage To The Musical Legacy Of Chuck Schuldiner", tentatively due in June through Holland's Mascot Records:

"This past Saturday, February 28th, the first recording session for the 'Within The Mind' project was completed at ARS studios in Orlando, FL. We recorded the drum tracks for 4 middle-era DEATH tracks with former DEATH, CONTROL DENIED, and current ICED EARTH drummer Richard Christy. The session went extremely well and we are all very happy with the results. This session has set a very high standard for the rest of the project and I won't rest until the rest of the project sessions meet or exceed the bar set this past Saturday by Richard and the killer staff at ARS.

"I also want to announce the launch of the official site for the 'Within The Mind' project: www.deathtribute.com. Here you will soon be able to find contributing artist profiles, starting with Richard Christy, as well as news, and short QuickTime video clips and still photos from the project's recording sessions. At the moment there is only a banner up on the site and the first new content will start to go up with the next couple days.

"More great news: the members of the Roadrunner Records band CHIMAIRA have contacted me to express their love of Chuck's music and to ask to be a part of the project, so I am happy to announce their addition to the line-up. In keeping with the format of the rest of the tribute they will not be performing as band unto themselves. Vocalist Mark Hunter will contribute vocals to a track or tracks performed by other contributors while the rest of the band, which now includes recently recruited SOILWORK drummer Richard Evansand, will perform a track on which the vocals will be handled by another guest. To quote Mark, 'I wouldn't be a vocalist right now if it weren't for Chuck's music.' "

As previously reported, the project, which was conceived by CKY guitarist/vocalist Deron Miller as a means to help Murphy raise money for his medical bills (Murphy is currently receiving treatment for a massive brain tumor with which he was diagnosed in August 2001), is expected to feature a number of special guest appearances, including those by Miller, Murphy, Christy, Matt Thompson (KING DIAMOND), Matt DiFabio (PISSING RAZORS, SINGLE BULLET THEORY), Dave Culross (MALEVOLENT CREATION, SUFFOCATION), Luc Lemay (GORGUTS), Patrick Mameli (ex-PESTILENCE), Jean-Francois Dagenais (KATAKLYSM), Mikael Thomson (SLIPKNOT), Paul Gray (SLIPKNOT), Brett Hoffmann (ex-MALEVOLENT CREATION), Ross Dolan (IMMOLATION), Mike Chlasciak (PAINMUSEUM, ex-HALFORD), and Terry Butler (SIX FEET UNDER, ex-DEATH, MASSACRE). Other musicians that are interested in participating (if their touring and/or recording schedules allow) include Peter Tägtgren (HYPOCRISY, PAIN), Chuck Billy (TESTAMENT), Eric Peterson (TESTAMENT, DRAGONLORD), Andy LaRocque (KING DIAMOND), and Ryan and Chad of MUDVAYNE.

DEATH Tribute CD To Include 'Sound Of Perseverance' Material

Despite previous reports to the contrary "at least one" song from DEATH's "Sound of Perseverance" CD will be included on the upcoming DEATH tribute album, "Within The Mind - In Homage To The Musical Legacy Of Chuck Schuldiner" (website), guitarist James Murphy (ex-DEATH, TESTAMENT, OBITUARY) has told BLABBERMOUTH.NET.

KATAKLYSM, Ex-PESTILENCE, GORGUTS Members Confirmed For DEATH Tribute

Jean-Francois Dagenais (KATAKLYSM), Patrick Mameli (ex-PESTILENCE), and Luc Lemay (GORGUTS) and are he latest musicians confirmed to appear on the upcoming DEATH tribute project, "Within The Mind - In Homage To The Musical Legacy Of Chuck Schuldiner", tentatively due in June through Holland's Mascot Records.

As previously reported, the project, which was conceived by CKY guitarist/vocalist Deron Miller as a means to help guitarist James Murphy (ex-TESTAMENT, DEATH, OBITUARY) raise money for his medical bills (Murphy is currently receiving treatment for a massive brain tumor with which he was diagnosed in August 2001), is expected to feature a number of special guest appearances, including those by Miller, Murphy, Lemay, Mameli, Dagenais, Dave Culross (MALEVOLENT CREATION, ex-SUFFOCATION), Mikael Thomson (SLIPKNOT), Paul Gray (SLIPKNOT), Brett Hoffmann (ex-MALEVOLENT CREATION), Richard Christy (ICED EARTH, ex-DEATH, CONTROL DENIED), Ross Dolan (IMMOLATION), Mike Chlasciak (PAINMUSEUM, ex-HALFORD), and Terry Butler (SIX FEET UNDER, ex-DEATH, MASSACRE). According to Murphy, "The track selection will span DEATH's career from 'Scream Bloody Gore' to 'Symbolic', the thought being that the 'Sound of Perseverance' songs are too recent to consider for a tribute CD."

JAMES MURPHY Discusses Upcoming DEATH Tribute CD

Former DEATH/TESTAMENT/OBITUARY guitarist James Murphy has provided BLABBERMOUTH.NET with the following exclusive update on his current activities:

"The DEATH tribute project I am working on organizing and will soon begin recording is officially titled: 'Within The Mind - An Homage To The Musical Legacy Of Chuck Schuldiner'. I will begin pre-production rehearsals with primary drummer Dave Culross [MALEVOLENT CREATION, ex-SUFFOCATION] some time in the next couple weeks but will spend time fleshing out the final tracklist and deciding who will do what with Deron Miller [CKY] for a few days immediately prior to the rehearsals.

"So far there are quite a few confirmed guests. Those include: me, Deron Miller, Dave Culross, Mikael Thomson [SLIPKNOT], Paul Gray [SLIPKNOT], Brett Hoffmann [ex-MALEVOLENT CREATION], Ross Dolan [IMMOLATION], Mike Chlasciak [PAINMUSEUM, ex-HALFORD], and Terry Butler [SIX FEET UNDER, ex-DEATH, MASSACRE].

"There are also quite a few others who want to participate, if their touring and/or recording schedules allow. Those include: Peter Tägtgren [HYPOCRISY, PAIN], Chuck Billy [TESTAMENT], Eric Peterson [TESTAMENT, DRAGONLORD], Luc Lemay [GORGUTS], Andy LaRocque [KING DIAMOND], Richard Christy [ICED EARTH, ex-DEATH, CONTROL DENIED], Ryan and Chad of MUDVAYNE, Patrick Mameli [ex-PESTILENCE], Jean-Francois Degenais [KATAKLYSM], and a number of others, so expect the confirmed roster to grow.

"The track selection will span DEATH's career from 'Scream Bloody Gore' to 'Symbolic', the thought being that the 'Sound of Perseverance' songs are too recent to consider for a tribute CD.

"The label that is backing the project is Holland's Mascot Records. A number of studios are being considered for the basic tracks but no final decision has been made at this point. The majority of the overdubs from all the guests will be recorded by myself at various studios and remote locations via a powerful mobile recording system. I will carry this system around with me to a few different locations in both the U.S. and Europe, in order to most cost effectively gather the performances of all the contributors. The album will then be mixed, by myself and, if everything works to plan, at least one other 'name' producer of note.

"This project was conceived by Deron Miller as a means to help me raise money for my medical bills and has the blessing of the Schuldiner family.

"If all goes well, I intend to get started with pre-production and final writing sessions for the second DISINCARNATE CD, which is still untitled at this point, as soon as the 'Within The Mind' project wraps."
